When the Taliban began its swift takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Noori family knew they had to get out of the country. They had already seen one family member assassinated and several others had attempts made on their lives. Staying in Afghanistan was not an option.
A Taliban suicide bomber killed Shah Jahan Noori, a provincial police chief, in 2011. They attempted to kill his brother, Mohibullah Noori, and son, Farid Noori, a couple years later but were unsuccessful. Mohibullah had worked as policy director for Afghanistan’s National Security Council. Farid worked with the country’s minister of industry and commerce.
