A fire in the southern Russian region of Dagestan killed at least 35 people and injured dozens more, Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said Tuesday.

The disaster occurred on the outskirts of the regional capital, Makhachkala, late Monday, when a fire spread from a car repair shop to a nearby gas station, according to the ministry — leading to a blaze that spanned around 600 square meters (about 6,460 square feet). Local media reported that the fire caused explosions.
